Getting Rich from Teaching Fitness


How many ways can you make money from having an eta qualification? Work in Gym? Work in a school? Work with your own clients? Use a walk fit for life franchise, run a boot camp? Work on a ship? Work overseas? Lecture at a college like eta? Write a newspaper column? Coach a team?
How about becoming a millionaire by shooting your own videos and posting them on You Tube?
According to Business Day 2011-12-13: Peter Cilliers shoots five-minute videos of himself working out in the living room of his Pretoria home and posts them on YouTube. This month he earned more than R 62 000 from them.
In 2005 Cilliers returned home to Pretoria from the UK. He was 26 years old, he had no job and was 45kg overweight. With some experience in video production and a course in sports therapy from a London college, he decided it was time for a change.
"I thought, let me start a daily diary on YouTube. I did my whole body transformation on YouTube day by day and that’s how I started," he says. That was 2006 and it took him 112 days to lose the weight — and his experience struck a chord with YouTube viewers.
Today his one-man operation draws on average about 100 000 YouTube viewers a day to his channel and makes about R 60 000 a month after tax.
Cilliers’s internet fitness business has become his sole source of income and he does it on a shoestring budget. He shoots his videos in his living room, edits them and uploads at least one a week.
His clients are mostly Americans but he has followers in a number of countries, including the Czech Republic. His YouTube success also led to his lifestyle website SixPackFactory.com, where he sells fitness products such as workout plans and diets.

Was building the 2010 stadiums a bad decision?


Feel it it’s here – well face it it’s gone! It’s gone and we have several beautiful and very expensive stadia left behind as one of the legacies of this wonderful event. I want to address this particular legacy. In future blogs we can interrogate the validity of the other legacies that should have been left as result of FIFA World Cup 2010.
 The Cape Times 29th may 2012 writes: 
World Cup Stadiums ‘could soon be white elephants’
Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula claims that communities are saying that they don’t have facilities yet we have massive stadiums that are underutilized because they are too costly to use.
Were we caught up in the euphoria of hosting the FIFA World Cup? Could all that money have been more wisely spent rather than on new stadia? Some argue that FIFA would not have agreed to the event if we did not build these stadia? Is this true?
What is your view? Tear them down and save the upkeep costs or what?

Can South Africa win 12 medals at the London Summer Olympics?


On the 2nd November 2011, according to News 24, SASCOC president Gideon Sam was still confident that his dream of 12 medals for South Africa at the London Olympics can be achieved.
He felt informed by what other countries like New Zealand, Kenya, Holland, Sweden and Australia had achieved. Sam said “I looked at things like their population, GDP and performance at the last Games in Beijing in 2008 and asked deep questions about us and the talent or lack of it that we have at our disposal. This exercise told me that with better plan and co-ordination, we should, all things being equal, perform better in London."
The London Olympics commence on the 27th July and end on the 12th August 2012. In the 2008 Beijing Olympics a total of 958 medals were won of which South Africa won one. The United States of America won 110.
Did Sam set us up for failure or is it important to dream big? My opinion is that we dream to give us inspiration and passion, in the full knowledge that very few actually come true.
Dreams aside, which names spring to mind for you as South Africa’s Summer Olympics medal hopefuls? Qualifications have been achieved in athletics, rowing, canoeing, road cycling, hockey and equestrian events. Can you think of potential medal winners? With an eye on the London Olympics, do you think Oscar Pistorious is a disadvantaged athlete or an advantaged athlete?

The 2012 London Olympics is around the corner and South Africa is hoping for 12 medals. Do you think Oscar Pistorius (The Blade Runner) could get one of these? On the other hand do you think he should be there in the first place? I ask because there is evidence that Pistorius’ artificial legs give him a performance advantage rather than a disadvantage. I have noted the following put out by Dr Ross Tucker from the Sports Science Institute of South Africa. He presents this case under the heading: Oscar Pistorius, and the scientific cover-up and hatchet job he and his band of "scientists" got away with

The following is a direct quote from Dr Tucker:
A South African double-amputee, bursts onto the scene in 2004, declares an intention to run in the Olympic Games in 2007, then goes through two rounds of scientific testing to confirm his claims that the high-tech carbon fibre blades that he runs with (called Cheetahs) do not give him a performance advantage. 

Those two rounds of testing are done first at the request of the IAAF in Germany, and then in Texas as part of Pistorius' appeal against the ban issued based on the results from the Germany tests. 

But what did the tests show?  Somewhere along the journey, the science is hijacked by a massive PR machine that has followed Pistorius since 2007, and which applies pressure to the IAAF to permit his participation, and then ultimately on the process by which the Court of Arbitration ultimately declared that there was insufficient evidence to ban Pistorius.

2011 then was not the year that the Pistorius question was first asked.  Rather, it was the year that it became relevant, for Pistorius qualified for the IAAF World Championships and raced in Daegu in August.  That created a firestorm of media coverage, and the resultant question was asked.  The same will likely be true in 2012, and so this is an issue that will almost certainly be revisited then.

But these are the crucial facts, most of which have been overlooked by the media, or obscured by lies and PR tactics.

The scientific explanation - back to theory, proven by tests
The two rounds of testing revealed fairly conclusively that Pistorius did not "run" in the manner that able-bodied runners do.  Mechanically, it was a totally different locomotion, which Peter Bruggemann, the German biomechanist who did the German testing, described as a "bouncing locomotion at a lower metabolic cost".

The "metabolic cost" statement was important, and was made based on tests that showed that Pistorius used 25% less oxygen during 400m sprinting than able-bodied runners.  That by itself is not a performance advantage, but it is very important when you keep in mind the entire scientific process.  That process must begin with a question and scientific rationale.  That question is "Does Pistorius enjoy a performance advantage?" and the rationale is:
- More energy return from carbon fibre than human tendon means that metabolic cost would be reduced.  That's important because the ability to run at a given pace for 400m is limited by metabolic changes in the muscle.  These can't be measured directly, but metabolic cost is a proxy for them
- Lighter mass of carbon fibre limbs means lower cost of accelerating the limbs, allowing quicker limb movement and therefore sprinting
- Carbon fibre does not fatigue, whereas muscle/tendon is known to be significantly affected by the end of a 400m race

So the metabolic finding by Bruggemann confirmed the first 2 points above.  Directly, using less oxygen has little bearing on sprint performance, but it does point to confirmation of energy return, metabolic and performance advantages. On the note of the energy return, Bruggemann measured energy loss in the human tendon at 41%, compared to only 8% for the carbon fibre blade, so the picture came together pretty clearly.  Hence the ban.   However, there were problems with the research, particularly the measurement of oxygen during sprinting.  There's no doubt the conclusion was made too broadly based on the tests, a mistake that would prove costly in the scientific "debate" at CAS, because it gave Pistorius a fairly easy means to refute the finding. 

That is, Pistorius was able to appeal the decision and perform his own tests, and his team designed a test that would measure oxygen use during slower, low-intensity running. 

Those tests again showed that Pistorius used less oxygen than able-bodied runners, even when running slowly (17% lower, to be precise).  However, by "creatively" adding in data from world class distance runners measured over a period of ten years, the researchers were able to manipulate the data sufficiently to show that he was not statistically different from other runners.  The fact that these runners were not sprinters, but marathon runners, seemed not to matter to either the scientists, or CAS, or the media who have covered the story. 

It's an extra-ordinary comparison to make, particularly when you consider that data do exist for other sprinters.  And most tellingly, when you compare Pistorius to these other sprinters, then suddenly you get a picture that shows that he is 14% and 2.3 SD more economical.  That's a big difference, and had they included those comparisons, as they should have, then the conclusion of the "scientific" paper would have been totally different - it would have had to conclude that Pistorius is metabolically and mechanically different from able-bodied runners, and these differences are consistent with a performance advantage.

Manchester City - choke or panic?

Did Manchester City players choke or did they panic? How could a team with the calibre players and the budget of Manchester City make such heavy weather of beating QPR eventually snatching the UK Premier league title in extra time? They did not lack talent therefore was it a mental issue? What part did choking or panicking play in their second half display? City played against ten QPR men for most of the second half, had virtually all the possession, missed a staggering amount of kicks at goal before Dzeko equalised and then Aguero sealed the victory.  Just check the relevant match stats: City had 81% of the possession, 44 goal attempts to 3 and 19 corners to nil.

So, was it choke or panic?  According to Malcolm Gladwell on the “Art of failure”  "Choking" sounds like a vague and all-encompassing term, yet it describes a very specific kind of failure.  Under conditions of stress the explicit system sometimes takes over. That's what it means to choke.  Panic, in this sense, is the opposite of choking. Choking is about thinking too much. Panic is about thinking too little. Choking is about loss of instinct. Panic is reversion to instinct. They may look the same, they may result in poor performance but they are worlds apart."

REPS SA

This week I met with Scott Schreuder, CEO of REPS SA.  REPS SA is South Africa’s arm of the Register of Exercise Professionals.  The Registers are well established in the Australia, Europe, UK and New Zealand, and you cannot work in the fitness profession in these countries, unless you are registered with REPS.  To be recognised by REPS, you have to hold a certificate from an accredited institution and you also need a valid CPR and First Aid certificate.  In some countries, applicants need professional indemnity insurance which they organise themselves and others may be able to access this insurance through their REPS body.  I see that FitSure is taking up the professional indemnity insurance for SA.
One of the things I wanted to tell you in this blog is about a development that occurred at the IHRSA convention in Milan last year.  All international representatives of REPS agreed to map their standards so that they could establish minimum professional standards internationally.  I am currently working with REPS SA to help identify which standards in SA map to the standards in the other countries.  Once this mapping is done, we really will have an international body representing the fitness profession.  Scott Schreuder tells me that REPS is making inroads into the profession in the USA as well.  Despite its incredible input to the fitness industry and its well respected contribution to sport science, the USA does not have one autonomous body that represents the industry as a whole.  This is not to say that there are not some great organisations, it is just that they lack autonomy.
I hear that REPS SA has had a really good uptake of membership; reaching almost two thousand members now.  Let’s hope that this membership continues to grow.  If there is a professional register then we have a profession.  A professional register gives the profession representation and it gives the profession status.  We support it fully at eta and because we do, we give our graduates a year’s membership once they have gone through their graduation ceremony.

The latest IDEA Fitness Journal cites some interesting research published recently in the American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine by O’Connor, Herring, & Carvalho (2010).  The researchers wrote on the mental health benefits of strength training in adults.  If you have a chance, get the IDEA January 2012 edition.  It has such valuable articles backed up by current research.  For example, these researchers I just mentioned cite seven randomised controlled studies that show resistance training improves several aspects of cognition in healthy older adults; one profound effect being improved memory.  Another benefit is improved executive function – this has nothing to do with your boss – but it has a lot to do with the control centre of your brain!  Improved executive function in the brain (the “command-and-control” function of cognition) is linked to resistance training (Anderson-Hanley, Nimon & Western, 2010) as well as cardiovascular exercise (Colombe & Framer, 2003).  Perhaps this is why eta students do well while they study with us – they exercise hard so they get smarter!

Gary Taubes wrote his ground-breaking book "The Diet Delusion".  I am currently reading this amazing expose and I love what is revealed through the Meta studies that Taubes discusses in his work.  I am ploughing through the book and exhausted by the lengths Taubes goes to with the science but I love what I am reading.  In fact, I met Tim Noakes recently when we were on a bus to OR Tambo Airport - he felt that Gary Taubes deserved the Nobel Prize for science - I see what Tim means now!
